Book The North American Indian

For more than 30 years, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) traveled across North America to record what the war of extermination by European immigrants, impoverishment and assimilation had left of the culture of the indigenous peoples of North America at the beginning of the 20th century. His travels were a race against time, taking him from the Mexican border to high north on the shores of the Bering Sea. He documented the customs and traditions of some 80 indigenous peoples and worked obsessively to realize his life's work, which culminated in the publication of his encyclopedia, The North American Indian. In the end, the monumental œuvre comprised twenty volumes of text and twenty portfolios of over 2000 photographs. No photographer has ever produced a larger body of work on the subject. More than any other explorer or artist, Curtis continues to shape our conception of North American "Indians" to this day. This book showcases his artistically outstanding photographs and describes Curtis's own life adventure, which took him not only to the vastness of the prairies, but also to the film studios of Hollywood.
